History

Johnson Creek Boat Launch is where the Clark Fork River enters Lake Pend Oreille. Settlers Reuben and Emma Johnson came to the area in 1890, claiming approximately 94 acres to build a home and clear land for crops. A subsequent owner, W.B. Moss, passed the land to the public in 1926.

The spot was used afterward as a park, campsite, and boat launch. In June 1971, a four-section dock was added, after being constructed in the Idaho State Penitentiary and delivered by the Department of State Parks. 

The site is now one of the more popular access sites managed by Fish and Game in the Idaho Panhandle, offering convenient access to the Clark Fork River, Clark Fork Delta and Lake Pend Oreille. The site was temporarily closed in fall 2019 for the Clark Fork Delta restoration project. The restoration project aims to reduce land erosion and restore wildlife habitat in the delta.
