This site documents the public access points along the county’s most historic waterways. Public water access in Bonner County has never been guaranteed. In December of 2022, the county gave away 50 feet of public waterfront to a developer, with debate focused partially on whether or not public access was established, and if it was established, if it was actually being used.
Because when it comes to public access, if the public stops using it, developers can argue that it should no longer be public. The issue prompted local nonprofits to identify and map other at-risk public water access sites, a project that led to a partnership between Project 7B, the Kalispel tribe, Kaniksu Land Trust and Bonner County Historical Society. The project received grant funding to map out public access sites and their history, as well as carefully research the lesser-known sites.

The Bonner County Historical Society & Museum preserves and shares the rich history of Bonner County through engaging exhibits, educational programs, research resources, and community events. Kaniksu Land Trust
Kaniksu Land Trust is a nationally accredited nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to caring for the lands and people of the Kaniksu Region in north Idaho and northwest Montana. Based in Sandpoint, Idaho, we work alongside landowners, community members, businesses, and public agencies to protect forests, farms, waterways, wildlife habitat, and places that connect people with nature. Through land conservation, outdoor education, and collaborative community projects, we strive to ensure the region remains healthy, resilient, and accessible for generations to come. Together, we are preserving the landscapes, waters, and outdoor traditions that make this place so special.
Project 7b
Project 7B is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to helping Bonner County residents understand and engage in local land use planning. Through educational resources, public outreach, and collaboration with community partners, Project 7B promotes transparent planning processes, informed public participation, and responsible growth that reflects shared community values.
