History

Once a logging camp, Green Bay was owned by the United States by 1939, and became a highly popular free camping site and recreation area, despite a rough road in and dubious parking. Green Bay echoed the larger camping evolution happening across the country. Camping in National Forests evolved here and elsewhere from a major early necessity into a popular public recreation activity during the early 20th century. Fueled by the automobile, camping demand prompted official Forest Service management, slowly transforming forests across the United States into managed vacation destinations. Despite its popularity, this particular site remained relatively undeveloped until 2024, when the Idaho Panhandle National Forests closed the area for a complete renovation. The campground reopened it in summer 2025 with road, parking, and campground improvements. Five campsites were added to the campground, and 17 paid sites are now available.
