History

This public access point is known by the name of the road adjacent to it. In the 1960s, A realtor, Bea Fisher, launched a petition to change the name of the road to Lakeshore Drive, reasoning that it sounded better than the name at the time, Fish Hatchery Road. In 1962, the Lakeside Needlettes 4-H club adopted “highway safety” as their project for the year, and succeeded in changing the name, installing safety signs along the road and placing a street light at the intersection of the road with Highway 95. With the cooperation of the county commissioners, the club had speed limit signs and "watch out for children" signs erected along the drive, as well as large signs bearing the new name. The sheriff and state patrol cooperated by instituting more frequent patrols of the drive. Club members raised enough money to pay half the cost of installing the mercury vapor street light at the intersection. The county paid the other half.
